This course offers an introductory exploration of toric algebraic varieties and their geometry. Varieties are solution sets of systems of algebraic equations, which are ubiquitous in mathematics and sciences. Toric varieties are a very special, but important, class of varieties which can be completely described in terms of combinatorial objects: polytopes and polyhedral cones. Due to this toric varieties provide a connection between very different subfields in mathematics. Moreover, many abstract concepts from algebraic geometry have a very concrete interpretation in terms of the combinatorial description. On the one hand, this helps to get a better understanding of those abstract concepts. On the other hand, this makes toric varieties into an ideal testing ground for general unsolved conjectures in algebraic geometry. |
