This course will explore one of the central aspects of every teacher’s day-to-day: classroom discourse and interaction. During the semester, we will investigate different features of classroom discourse, including teacher talk, feedback, correcting errors and mistakes, and explore different methods used in a communicative language classroom. After learning about the theoretical frameworks (e.g., critical discourse analysis) and strategies and methods to support “successful” classroom discourse, participants will analyze real-life classroom situations and present their suggestions and ideas. Apart from language-related scenarios, we will further address challenging situations and the benefits and pitfalls of difficult discussions in the classroom. In this highly interactive and practice-oriented course, participants are expected to read secondary literature for each week, work in groups, and engage in creative work or role play. All literature will be provided on Moodle. |
