In this class we will closely examine two dystopian Canadian novels, Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven, and their adaptation on screen (and, in Atwood’s case, as a graphic novel). Students will learn about the cultural and literary context both novels are set in, about adaptation theory, dystopian and speculative fiction, and about literary strategies for representing hypothetical futures.
Texts to be bought: Both novels. All other items will be made available. |
