This is a new lecture in response to the recent breakthrough in fusion science/ Neue Veranstaltung zum Durchbruch in der Fusionsforschung
In Dezember 2022 Laser driven fusion became the first laboratory fusion process to achieve break-even (see e.g. https://www.science.org/content/article/historic-explosion-long-sought-fusion-breakthrough, https://www.spiegel.de/wissenschaft/usa-wissenschaftler-erzielen-durchbruch-in-der-kernfusion-a-218eeb22-e50d-401f-a769-4d8cbb12f7e5) with over 3MJ of fusion energy released.
This lecture will address the physics and challenges of fusion energy generation and focus on the specifics of laser driven fusion. At the end of the lecture there will be space for discussion of fusion as a future source of energy and the steps that are required to turn current results into a viable reactor.
This lecture is targeted at all students wishing to develop an understanding of fusion physics, specifically in the context of future energy generation.
Due to the late addition of this lecture, registration for the lecture and exam will be in paper format during the lecture.
