The course „Investigating the rise of authoritarianism in Europe´s liberal democracies and beyond“ aims a broader understanding of the contemporary political changes in the old continent (with focus on EU-States): the rise of far-right parties in Western Europe and the rule of increasingly anti-liberal, anti-democratic regimes in the East. In the first half of the semester the focus will be on theoretical concepts of authoritarian movements and political systems, that are based on historical examination with emphasis on economic developments that shape liberal democracies and could lead to their abolition. While in the second part of the course the attention shifts on selected countries (France, Italy, Germany, Hungary etc.) and the rise of authoritarianism in a given historical and economical context inquiring similarities in policies and reasons for popularity of the authoritarian forces and at same time keeping a sharp eye on their specificity in emergence and settings.
We invite and encourage students to take part in the course with all levels of English and engage themselves in discussions where we exchange different perspectives and levels of knowledge about an internationally relevant topic. |
