In the study of musical practices, Transcultural Music Studies represent a modern discipline that examines music in its socio-cultural, historical, and global contexts. Building on diverse lines of research traditions, its advancing methodologies combine several approaches, thus developing its unique set of research methods.
The seminar is therefore dedicated to the methodological approaches of Transcultural Music Studies. The class examines the discipline’s history as well as modern research approaches and aims for a critical discussion of these methods. From early concepts of comparative musicology to methods of ethnomusicology and transcultural multi-perspective approaches, the students deal with the diversity of methodological procedures. Procedures such as field and archival research, recording and documentation of the musical act, participatory observation, interviewing, music as living heritage, collaborative research and applied ethnomusicology represent a selection of the methods addressed.
The seminar in English language combines the reading of essential literature with practical exercises, which deepen the methods learned by means of the students' own investigation of music and performances as well as in an excursion.
