Classical invariant theory asks for invariants of a subgroup of the general linear group. More precisely, one is looking for polynomials that are invariant if the group acts linearly on the variables of the polynomial. The trace or the determinant are important examples of invariants of the general linear group. In this course we are going to prove the first fundamental theorem of classical invariant theory for the general linear group. Moreover, we will talk a little bit about the representation theory of this group.
