In this seminar, Prof. Torres will present the central elements of a new vision of social justice that is closely linked to the current evolution of material social processes and the prevailing normative currents in the Western Hemisphere of world society. This new normative constellation, based on a sociological rationality, he calls "World Social Justice" (JSM). The idea of JSM that Prof. Torres will propose processes and recombines four already existing general concepts: (1) social justice as equality of position; (2) social justice as equality of opportunity; (3) social justice as meritocracy; and (4) social justice as survival equality. The seminar will address the further development of each of these existing formulations. Of the four terms, not all will be presented in exactly this form, but they will capture each of the meanings mentioned without changing them. Some of these general notions of social justice will in turn be subdivided into more specific terms. As will be shown in the seminar, these four concepts are in different positions and stages of development in each place in world society. Some are dominant, some are not, some proliferate expansively, some simply remain unchanged, and finally there are some that retreat. In addition to integrating certain aspects of these formulations, the JSM rejects sensitive components of each. The seminar will also show how the idea of JSM proposed by Prof. Torres is defined based on a critical dialogue with the normative approaches of Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, John Rawls, Michael Sandel, Amartya Sen, Robert Nozick, Thomas Piketty, Chantal Mouffe, Hans Jonas, Judith Butler, Nancy Fraser, Frank Fanon, Francois Dubet, Andrew Dobson, Aimé Césaire, Leonardo Boff and others. The content proposed for the seminar is contained in Prof. Torres' book, World Social Justice: recomposing the Progressive Horizon, which is currently being published.
The seminar will take place as a block on a weekend from Friday to Sunday. The exact date will be announced at the beginning of the semester. An introductory seesion will be held at the end of October. |
