The election of President Biden was heralded as a resurgence of progressive ideas within the body politic of the United States. However, the Democratic party is split between a progressive and and a moderate wing, the former promoting progressivism as a means to overcome social and racial inequality while moderates warn these policies are going against the overall political consensus in the United States. Meanwihle, the country remains deeply divided between "liberals" and "conservatives" on a broader scale. All of these developments beg the question, can progressives actually win elections?
This course will address the questions of how progressive ideas and ideologies developed inside the United States, whether a progressive movement exists or not, and what influence progressive ideas had on the design of the American political system, as well as on domestic and foreign policy programs. |
