Visions of cosmopolitanism and how they may link to the digital is central to this seminar. We will ask the following questions: Has our access to a variety of new contexts via digitality made life experience more cosmopolitan, or does the control and filtering mechanism of algorithms mean that the opposite is actually the case? Are we, thus, living in a new age of digital neo-nationalism? Indeed, what does cosmopolitanism even mean? Should it be seen as linked to ethics and democracy?
It is intended that we will read a number of introductory texts and that students will then later engage in their own research projects. |
