Not only in Germany, but also in other European countries and other regions of the world (e.g., USA, Brazil) have populist parties recently disrupted the political system. What explains this phenomenon? This seminar seeks to answer this question and also examines the consequences of populist party success. The seminar focuses  on current developments around the Alternative for Germany (AfD) as well as "older" examples of right-wing populist parties (RWPs) in Germany (e.g., Schill party, REP). The developments in Germany will be analyzed in a comparative manner taking other Western European countries into context.
