For MA-students, this seminar is part of a ten-credit module, and these participants also have to attend the lecture series on Modernism. Lehramt-students, in particular those who take this class as a Vorbereitungsmodul, may want to consider whether the lecture series might also be of interest to them, even if they cannot obtain additional credits for it.
In the seminar we will read a lot of texts, albeit rather short ones. Modernism being a diverse response to various drastic developments in philosophy, demography, technology, the social, political, and cultural environment, and, not least, to the Great War, we consider it more useful to explore a multitude of short works rather than a very limited number of novels. We will discuss texts by Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, H.D., James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Ernest Hemingway, Katherine Mansfield and several other authors; in addition, we will also devote at least one session to developments in popular literature, i.e. science fiction, horror and detective fiction. The texts will be provided via Moodle.
The seminar will take place in person, and, according to the latest information we have obtained, the German 3G rules (vaccinated, recovered, or tested) will apply. |
