While in previous times, drama and poetry were regarded as literature proper and the novel dismissed as mere sentimental flights of fancy, this changed in the 19th century, and the novel became the dominant and most successful from of literary expression. In the seminar we will cover works from the beginning to the end of the century in order to trace the momentous cultural, social and literary developments that took place and were addressed in the texts. We will begin with Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, followed by either Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre or Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. As an example of the industrial novel, we will read Charles Dickens’ Hard Times. We will decide on the text from late Victorianism in one of the first sessions – possibilities are Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure, H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine, one of the novels by H. Rider Haggard, Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, or a few other works.
Things have changed since the seminar was advertised as "online". It will, actually take place in person, and the German 3G rules (vaccinated, recovered, or tested) will apply. |
