ONLINE PLUS: The Tragedy of Global Commons - Einzelansicht

This class looks at global commons – large natural resource domains beyond state jurisdiction and accessible to all countries. The first part of the class looks at the concept of commons, both conceptually and as historically existing forms of commoning as well as processes of "enclosure" and propertization which started with the colonial expansion and the spread of capitalism. The bulk of the class looks at the institutional design and problems of existing global commons - the Antarctica, oceans, the atmosphere, and the Outer Space. The class has an interdisciplinary character, employing perspectives from sociology, political science, philosophy of justice, and critical international law. Thinkers discussed include Marx, Polanyi, Hardin Ostrom, and Harvey.
