Bemerkung

The course is a practical introduction to fMRI. We offer you the first part of the course  which coveres a practical introduction of fMRI analysis, such as MRI notions about MRI safety, basic MRI physics, how the fMRI works, common experimental designs, data acquisition and data analysis (pre-processing and functional localizer).

During the semester, students will acquire will develop their own experiment and record data in the MRI scanner of the JUH, which will be then analysed using SPM12 (a MATLAB toolbox). All the fMRI analysis steps will be explained in detail both theoretically and practically. We will cover the basic as well as the more advanced techniques of fMRI analysis, such as whole-brain analysis, region-of-interest analysis, functional connectivity and multivariate pattern analysis techniques.

Therefore, with this course, the students will be capable (1) to analyse fMRI data using different techniques and (2) prepare and execute standard neuroimaging experiments. Importantly this seminar is relevant for any student who would like to work in the future in cognitive neurosciences, applying neuroimaging methods.

Note that no textbook is required, but during the course digital material (lectures, publications, etc.) will be provided. Due to the structure of the course, it will be offered as a block seminar, taking place in two subsequent weekends (Friday-Saturday), altogether covering approximately 24 hours of intensive work.

The course is recommended to those students who plan to perform their master thesis work with fMRI techniques or who plan to work in neuroimaging laboratories after completion of their master’s work.

 TERMINE: 03.12-04.12.2021. whole days.

PLACE: to be announced

IMPORTANT NOTICE! Due to the COVID19 related restrictions of the university and due to the shortage of appropriate available rooms the seminar attendance is strictly limited this semester to 15 participants.

TO SECURE A PLACE PLEASE PREPARE AND SEND US A LETTER OF MOTIVATION. Details of the requirements of this letter will be given to you after registration to the course per email.

Dear Students,

thank you for your interest in the course Functional Neuroimaging.

Due to the requirements of the FSU JENA during the COVID-19 pandemic situation and due to the nature of the course, this semester i will have to limit the number of participants strongly in 15.
I will not be able to accomodate more students this semester unfortunately!

As there are many more students who expressed their interest in the course on the FRIEDOLIN surface so far, i would like to ask you the following. For the selection process to facilitate i kindly ask you to write me a brief, maximum 1 page long, LETTER OF INTEREST. In this letter please describe to me (1) why are you interested in the course and learning fMRI analysis; (2) what previous experiences do you have with fMRI and BOLD analysis and (3) what are your future plans regarding neuroimaging methods. As the course is strongly practice oriented we will have to meet personally once during the semester in a block-seminar form. The time of the blockseminar is Dec 3 and 4. PLEASE DONT REGISTER TO THE COURSE IF YOU CAN NOT BE THERE IN THIS WEEKEND!
Every other detail i will share with you in due time via the Moodle surface of the course, once you got admitted.
Please send your Letter of interest to my email address as soon as possible, with the subject-line detailing "letter-of-interest-fmri-course-2021wise". I will manually let students who sent this letter into the course in on a first-come-first-served basis.
Shall there be remaining places, those will be allocated to the students by the algorithm of FRIEDOLIN, the usual way. Once 15 is reached, we will not accept more applications.
Thank you for your understanding and looking forward meeting you per zoom and/or in real life!
Gyula Kovacs
