In the 1960's, historian Richard Hoftstadter argued that populism and more specifically anti-intellctualism are deeply rooted in the American body politic. And there are many examples of politicians riding the wave of populistic anti-establishment thinking to power, from Andrew Jackson to Donald Trump. Major parties have employed such arguments time and again, as they are part of the basic toolest of political campaigns in the United States. This class will examine populist, anti-establishment and anti-intellectual narratives in American politics, their roots as well as their current and future potency within the American political system. |
