This class critically investigates settler-colonialism and the effects it has had on indigenous knowledges. Rather than seeing the colonialization of North America as a historical point in time, we will look at how patterns and paradigms of settler colonialism have superseded and repressed indigenous knowledge production and indigenous narratives. In our first thematic block, we will define settler-colonialism, the next block will look at literary texts by First Nations Canadian and Native American authors. We will read poems, short stories and a novel. The third block will turn to indigenous science and knowledges which counteract and go beyond Western forms of knowledge production.
Books to be bought: Richard Wagamese Indian Horse. All other texts will be provided on Moodle. |
