The Seminar "Discrete Optimization" is open for four classes of participants.
(i) Master students, who have absolved already at least one of the courses "Discrete and Experimental Optimization A or B" (9 LP each) successfully. Such students have to work on a (research) topic, give a presentation (typically 60-90 minutes, including question & answer parts, which may start already during the presentation), and submit a written report on their results in the end. In good cases, this seminar topic may become the starting point for the master thesis project. But this is not mandatory.
(ii) Master students, who report on their (almost) completed master thesis project. By these presentations the supervisor gets an impression of the final thesis.
(iii) Bachelor students who report on their (almost) completed Bachelor thesis project.
(iv) Doctoral students (in optimization), who report on progress in their research; and external guest speakers.
Concerning participants from class (i), this is a 3-LP module.
Seminar language is English. However, if ALL participants agree to German, a presentation may be in German. An exception are students from class (iii). Bachelor students are always free to give their talks in German.
For participants from classes (ii) - (iv), it is NOT necessary to participate in all the other seminar sessions.
The topics are given in the first week of the semester. Motivated students may get their topics already earlier. In the meeting in the first week, also the dates for the presentations are fixed. Students form class (i) typically have their presentations in the second half of the semester.
Class (i) participants typically have two "private" meetings with their supervisor: the first one a few weeks after having received the topic; the second one about 10 days before the presentation to discuss details of the presentation. Observe: Our master programs in Mathematics and Business Mathematics are research-oriented; it is quite normal that topics in this seminar have research components or are fully on research level.
Important: The seminar is NOT open for master students without background in discrete optimization who have already collected 87 CP and need some more 3-point module. Also important: Typically, after the first semester week it is no longer possible to enter the seminar.
