Note that this seminar will start as an online course. If the pandemic situation allows and participants wish, we might switch to presence format later during the term. However, if there are any participants who will not be able to join meetings in presence (e.g. because at present they do not have accommodation in Jena), online participation will be made possible throughout.

Human social perception and communication requires the efficient analysis and representation of person-related information. Faces or voices convey a large variety of socially relevant information including a person’s identity, emotions, gender, attractiveness, age, ethnic background or focus of attention. Cognitive (Bruce & Young, 1986; Young & Bruce, 2011) and neurocognitive models (Haxby, Hoffmann, & Gobbini, 2000; Young, Frühholz & Schweinberger, 2020) of face and person perception acknowledge a degree of independence between these different aspects of perception which may be mediated by different types of ”diagnostic” stimulus information. In this seminar, students will present and discuss current research that aims at an integrative view on person perception that combines social, cognitive, and neuroscientific perspectives. Specifically, we will discuss a number of current empirical and review articles in the field, some of which have been published in recent special issues on Person Perception in the British Journal of Psychology (Schweinberger & Burton, 2011) and Visual Cognition (Yovel, Avidan, & O´Toole, 2017). Topics will include mental representations of familiar and unfamiliar faces, development of face perception, commonalities and differences between face and voice perception, social cognition, semantic representation of people, underlying brain systems, and individual differences in person perception and human interaction.
