This English-language seminar is primarily intended for students of the MSc specialization in Cognitive Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience (Modul M-Psy-KN202: Informationsverarbeitung). It may also be taken by students with relevant interests and backgrounds from the BSc/ MSc Nebenfach (e.g. B.A. PsyN-WP3) and international students.
The aim of the course is to provide an overview of current psychological and psycholinguistic thinking about language and communication.
The focus of the course is on active discussion: we read, discuss and work with a broad range of textbook chapters and journal articles, beginning with a basic background on speech production and understanding. Further topics can be chosen by the participants; they could include, for example, how language(s) are learnt, how words and sentences are processed in the brain, and the challenges of research on dialogue and interaction. If you have any special interests in these areas, feel free to contact me in advance.
This year, the course will take place in digital format via Zoom. It will have interactive elements, but it will be possible to take part in and contribute to the course asynchronously, if this is necessary. Please be prepared to read and prepare some text for most sessions rather than one single presentation. The exam will take the form of an essay; details will be discussed in the seminar.
