Intellectual visions of Europe and the analysis of digital activism will be central to this seminar. In many ways perspectives on and ideas of Europe have dominated recent discussion, from far-right populist movements that use the language of Europe and Christianity in an exclusionary manner, to "vacine nationalism" and/or European collectivity in relation to vacine procurement. Liberal democratic visions of Europe have featured in many mainstream platforms and by numerous politicians and authors, such as the German academic Ulrike Guerot, the German philosopher Jürgen Habermas and indeed Irish president and poet Michael D. Higgins. Viewing the subject from the area of cultural studies, in this seminar we will examine some of these recent perspectives, while also looking at how perspectives on Europe have evolved historically. The second part of the seminar will be dedicated to the analysis of pro-European digital activism, on the social media platform Twitter. What narrative tropes may be seen here, in leading grass-roots pro-European accounts? How may academics work with Twitter texts? What is the connection between "digital Europeanism" and other forms of Europeanism? |
