Notice: Due to the increasing coronavirus infections we will have online classes until the end of Nov.!

Expectations and Attendance

It is imperative that you engage the readings, think critically about them, and share your thoughts and questions during class. All assignments must be turned in on time. Late assignments will receive a ”5”. You are allowed only two unexcused absences (no more than 4 class hours). Each absence above that number will result in being unable to pass the final exam. In case of absence please notify the lecturer prior to missing class.

Grading

This course utilizes a weighted grading scale. The grades you receive on your various assignments will be out of 100 points (95%, 86% etc.). They will not, however, be weighted equally in ascertaining your final grade. The breakdown for the course is as follows: Term Paper 50%; Oral Presentation 30%;  Discussion/Participation 20%

Term paper (50%)

The term paper for this course will require that you produce a research paper focused on a certain topic discussed in class. For instance, you could choose to center your research on impact of cultural values on innovation strategies. The academic writing will be broken down into steps (choosing a topic, raising a research question, finding and citing sources, drafting an outline, writing an introduction, rough draft, revision, and final draft). Your final papers must be around 10-12 pages. Guidelines forthcoming.

Oral Presentation (30%)

The first half-hour (incl. discussion) of each regular class will be devoted to oral presentations. Each of you will be required to prepare a twenty-minute PowerPoint presentation on your chosen topic. Guidelines forthcoming.

Discussion/Participation (20%)

You are also expected to engage in given assignments during the class. Discussion and participation are essential to this course. Your score will be determined according to your behavior in class, the consistency and quality of your contribution to discussions.

Honor Code

All students must be familiar with and abide by the Honor Code, which covers issues such as plagiarism, falsification, unauthorized assistance or collaboration, cheating, and other grievous acts of academic dishonesty. Violations of the Honor Code will not be taken lightly.

Voraussetzungen

This class will be conducted in English, since the required reading texts are primarily derived from leading academic journals addressing current issues of innovation in China. You are expected to demonstrate competence in English language (at least B2 level) as well as strongly encouraged to participate in discussions in English.
