Sociolinguistics deals with linguistic reflexes of social categories such as age, gender, social background, provenance etc. It covers both traditional dialectology (English varieties) and more recent (qualitative as well as quantitative) approaches to linguistic variation, but the main focus of this course will be on topics other than English varieties. Participants will be expected to give an in-class presentation and to submit a research paper at the end of the term.
