In many ways perspectives on and ideas of Europe have dominated recent discussion, from discourse surrounding the Greek finanical crisis to far-right populist movements that use the language of Europe and Christianity in an exclusionary manner. Liberal democratic visions of Europe have also featured in many mainstream platforms and by numerous politicians and authors, such as the German academic and thinker Ulrike Guerot, German philosopher Jürgen Habermas and Irish president and poet Michael D. Higgins. Viewing the subject from the area of cultural studies, in this seminar we will examine some of these recent perspectives, from both left and right, while also looking at how perspectives on Europe have evolved historically. We will also examine how Europe has been imagined in popular culture, from the Eurovision Song Contest to the European City of Culture programme, as well as the Erasmus student exchange programme.
Due to the present situation, the seminar is likely to be conducted solely on-line, at least partly asynchronously, and will begin in the first week of May. I will email all participants regarding this as early as I can. So please check your university e-mail addresses regularly.
