This seminar presents and discusses approaches on inequalities and class theory. The aim is to find out answers to questions like: What aspects of these different sociological traditions are updated to explain current trends on inequalities and collective action? In which terms can we establish class divisions for sociological analysis to current social conflicts? Are consciousness, recognition, exclusion, identity still up to date concepts? How can we re-conceptualize former theories and bring them to the new social phenomena of 21st century?
In concrete terms, the following topics will be discussed in the seminar:
- Marxist and Weberian paradigms on social classes
- Class structure and class analysis
- Structural functionalism and individual opportunities
- Objective structures and class identities
- Collective action and power relations
- State, community and ”meritocracy”
- Social mobility and structural change
- Middle class and social conflict
