The world has never seen anything like China’s rise from a backward developing country to an economic superpower. For about 40 years, China has experienced unprecedent high economic growth and, today, is challenging the US as the hegemon in the capitalist world-system. However, there are different assessments of China’s further development: While some analysts believe that China will soon replace the US as most important economy, others point out that China might soon run into a deep economic and political crisis. In this course, students will analyze the trajectory of China’s rise. Students will learn more about the history of the Chinese state, Chinese capitalism and more recent developments such as the fast rise of China’s booming high-tech sector.
Due to a research stay of the lecturer (until Nov, 15th), a part of the seminar will be held as a one day compact session in January. An introductory session of the course will take place on Oct, 16th. |
