In this seminar we will focus on Social Cognition and Social Neuroscience for all three Psychology Master specializations.
Topics will cover basic and complex emotion recognition; face, voice & body perception; social attention and orientation; motivation; imitation & embodiment; perspective taking, empathy, compassion; group processes/social categories (in-group, out-group); prejudice & stereotypes; cooperation & conflict; self concept; social relationships; religion; moral and antisocial behaviour.
General structure of the seminar:
For each class it is necessary that each student reads the book chapter for that weeks session at home, being guided by the chapter questions. In class we will then have a brief general broad topic presentation by myself or a student (max. 20 min) based on the book chapter. After that we will engage in a brief small group discussion to clarify open questions (10 min). Then we will engage in a practical excerise guided by a student. This exercise may be based on a current research article, interview or lecture to the topic. For the responsible student it is recommended to make use of the provided online resources, like key papers, interviews, lectures and video demonstrations that I will provide or are gathered by own research. This should be an interactive part, thus not another frontal presentation. This part will fill another 25 min of the seminar time. In the last part of the seminar we will engage in a reflection time. Especially in this part we will try to cover the relevance of the topic for clinical applications, cognitive neuroscientific research as well as organisational and society matters. This should take about 20 min.
Requirements for passing the course:
Running at least 1 active presentation or exercise, active participation in small group discussion and learning diary.
Module exam:
You may get a grade for the module MPSYKN204, MPPSYKP204, MPSYMV202 or EXPPSY202 based on this seminar. Depending on the amount of interested students we will conduct an oral or written exam. You are allowed to limit your exam preparation to 3 topics from the seminar and inform me about these. These 3 topics will form your module exam. Thus, the focus of the exam is not on your ability to learn content by heart, but to use your knowledge in a dynamic analytical, assessing and creating manner. The guiding questions for the small group discussions are a good example of the questions to expect in the exam.
In the first session I will demostrate the structure of the course and we will sort students to the active parts of the seminars according to preference.
Please feel free to email me if you have further questions of any kind.
I look forward to an exciting seminar!
