This course concentrates on the study of British life narratives from the past 24 years. You will learn about different forms of life writing (prose narratives, graphic forms, audio-visual, and online formats). The main purpose of this class is to train students to study such narratives systematically in order to assess what they potentially teach us about British culture. We will put together a tool kit for analyzing such texts and then test the kit with a variety of texts across media and genres. In the final part of the seminar, students will work with a text of their own choice and show their ability to apply the tool kit. There are also creative writing elements and a range of secondary sources to read. At the end of the day, this course will introduce you to a great array of British voices such as Windrush migrants, postwar children, royal family members, football and music stars, bloggers and Youtubers from the twenty-first century and also train you in the development and application of textual analysis methods. Required Reading: See seminar schedule in moodle classroom.
