Welcome to our class on English Spelling and Punctuation – I am sure that it will be a fun and informative class, and I am looking forward to it very much!
In the upcoming semester we will be using two books by David Crystal as the foundation of our course and as the backdrop for many of our practical exercises. They are both entertainingly written and highly informative, and I will be re-reading them during the current semester break in preparation for our upcoming sessions. Here they are:
Spell it out – The singular story of English spelling
Making a point – The pernickety story of English punctuation
You can find them on Amazon for a very low price for the paperback version.
I would like to ask you to get your hands on them and begin reading now so that you do not have as much reading to do during the semester. For planning purposes, I am going to assume that you have read the first 20 chapters of each book (don't worry, they are fairly short), but feel free to read them from cover to cover if you have the time, which is what I will be doing. :-)
Important: While you are reading, please take notes on anything that strikes you as noteworthy or worth remembering. Collect at least two notes per chapter in each book (along with the page number) because they will be used in an activity that has to do with the exam. I will explain this in more detail during our first session.
If you have any questions, please reach out to me via email. |
