This seminar takes a wide perspective to the topic of the Internet and colonialism and draws on a number of arguments and case studies with origins in, among other countries, South Africa, Canada, Ghana, and Finland. The seminar will be thematically divided into two parts and will examine: 1) Arguments relating to the idea that the Internet, or manifestations of the Internet, is itself a quasi-colonial structure which furthers a type of US and/or Chinese digital neo-colonialism; and 2) How social media postings, and gaming culture and gaming structures communicate quasi-colonial images and narratives, with origins in the realities of colonialism.
The seminar is based on active participation, takes place in English and requires the writing of a Hausarbeit for the full amount of ECTS points. |
