Irish writers have been at the forefront of literary studies for the last century and even before that. From James Joyce to William Butler Yeats, and from Edna O'Brien to Eimear McBride, Irish writing has been a staple of anglophone literature of the 20th century. This trend has not abated in the 21st century. In both literary and commercial fiction, Irish writing is immensely successful in the last almost quarter of a century. In this course, we are going to focus on a select few texts from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland to see various trends in writing, common themes that the authors engage with, and what exactly it is that makes these texts Irish. Possible texts include Sally Rooney's Normal People, John Banville's The Sea, Sara Baume's A Line Made by Walking, Audrey Magee's The Colony, and Emma Donoghue's Haven among others. |
