In this course we will carry out hands-on projects in corpus linguistics, with a focus on language description, language comparison and language teaching. Using input from the theoretical part of the course, students will work (alone or in pairs) on questions like the following: Under what circumstances are specific structures (such as the be-passive and the get-passive) used? In what respects do translated texts from, say, English, German and Russian differ from each other? What are the major differences in the learner varieties of German and Chinese learners of English? Students are free to choose a topic of their interest and will go through the entire workflow from data extraction to data analysis. |
