In this seminar we will read poetry, narrative fiction and non-fiction by Black British writers from the 1950s until today, ranging from Sam Selvon's groundbreaking novel The Lonely Londoners (1956) to selected works of this year's T. S. Eliot Prize winner Anthony Joseph. We will examine the political and cultural contexts that have shaped Black British writing in the second half of the 20th and in the early 21st century. We will, in particular, discuss how Black British writers have explored the experience of migration and diaspora and how they have dealt with questions of belonging and identity, thus challenging and changing conceptions of Britishness. |
