As a supplement or contrast to the concept of the linguistic turn that had a momentous impact on the humanities during the second half of the 20th century, a visual, iconic or pictorial turn has taken place since the end of the last century. This has led to the establishment of interdisciplinary research and the increasing relevance of media, film, and visual studies. While postmodern theories of the 1980s and 1990s predominantly proclaimed the primacy of language, this turn focuses on visual perception and its fundamental role in human life and culture, developing currently influential theories of the visual in philosophy, art history, cultural studies and cognitive sciences.
Our lecture series aims to respond to these developments and to offer introductions to the various approaches to an aesthetics of the visual with a wide interdisciplinary scope. The topics will range from art, film, photography, and comics to specific genres and historical periods and also to research into neuroaesthetics.
For MA students of English and American studies, this lecture series is part of the module ”Culture/culture” together with the seminar ”Comics and Graphic Novels”. Even though many of the lectures are in German, international MA students are invited to enrol, and it will be sufficient if they only attend the lectures in English. |
