The 1930s began with an economic crisis and ended in war. For many, hardship and war never abated. It also followed on from two decades of feverish artistic developments in modernism. We will explore the relationship of texts to key events of the decade, from the rise of fascism, to the Spanish Civil War, to the Abdication Crisis. We will move from Paris to London to Berlin to Madrid. In this seminar we will explore the ways that this decade was framed by literary works, including WH Auden, Virginia Woolf, Djuna Barnes, Malcolm Lowry, Laurie Lee, George Orwell, and others. We will also include film, and television both from the period and retrospective contemporary works.
The reading list will be sent round closer to the start of term. |
