Ever since the pictures began to move on the screen, Shakespeare’s plays have been adapted to the new medium, sometimes in the attempt to re-capture the historical setting and atmosphere, but sometimes also with radical alterations and departures from traditional productions.
On Monday evenings – starting in the second week of the semester – those who are interested can watch the movies together; for the others I can try to make the films available in digital versions. On Wednesday – starting in the first week – we will discuss the films. We will begin with A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and participants should have read it before the semester begins. The other plays/movies are open for negotiation. |
