James Joyce's Ulysses is unquestionably one of the great novels of the 20th century, presenting the reader with the labyrinth of the metropolis, with the complexities of modernity, with a plethora of literary styles and experiments and also with an immense amount of jokes, high and low. Regarded to be one of the most difficult books in the English language, it is more often bought than read, and quite often feared by students. In this seminar we will try to amend this, and hopefully we can reach the stage where the delight and fun of reading Ulysses will replace the anxieties. Please buy the Gabler edition of Ulysses (all other editions have serious omissions and mistakes, and it is not really expensive) and start reading. If at the beginning of the third chapter you feel lost, don't panic, you are not alone. Just go on, it will get better again. The studies of Frank Budgen (James Joyce and the Making of Ulysses) and Stuart Gilbert (Ulysses, a Study) may be a little dusted, but they are still useful. |
