The cities we live in are in continuous transformation. They constantly need to adapt to current challenges such as climate change, resource availability as well as the diversification and polarization of society. There are very different perspectives and paradigms how this transformation should and could happen. Within this setting, conflicts arise in various forms and at different scales, such as goal conflicts regarding the outcomes of measures to reach urban sustainability (e.g. green gentrification). Negotiations about social and environmental justice, power relations and recognition are often at the heart of these conflicts.
In this seminar, we will examine theoretical perspectives on conflicts (e.g. within conflict sociology literature), discuss the functions and values of conflicts for societies and learn about methods to analyse, categorise and approach them. Then, the knowledge obtained will be applied to take a closer look on some examples of conflicts arising within urban transformations towards sustainability. This also includes an analysis of spatial and social contexts, stakeholders and urban governance modes involved as well as different developments of conflicts.
The seminar will include guest lecture(s), joint and individual readings, short case study presentations and discussions.
