The lecture provides an introduction to English phonetics and phonology. The first part of the lecture deals with the articulation of English speech sounds. In the domain of phonology, we will focus on segmental phonology, i.e. on the inventory of speech sounds with meaning-distinguishing function (phonemes) as well as their most important realisation variants in connected speech (allophones). Selected aspects of phonotactics and suprasegmental phonology will also be covered, especially syllable structure and rhythm. In order to successfully complete the course, students must additionally participate in a practical exercise specializing in the standard form of either British or American English pronunciation. This exercise aims at the improvement of the students’ pronunciation and provides training in transcription by means of the "International Phonetic Alphabet". There will be one written exam covering both the lecture and the practical exercise. Registration for the exam is linked to the theory lecture in Friedolin. No extra exam registration for the practical part is necessary.
Exchange students are welcome. Please send me an email for registration. Note that you will also have to attend both parts of the module to obtain 5 credits. |
