The course will be devoted to the main issues of collective memory and historical policy in contemporary Poland. Students will get acquainted with major symbolic themes of national memory, main institutions of historical policy, as well as crucial historical and political debates on the past, analysed in the light of crucial theories used nowadays in sociology and memory studies, in particular concepts of sociology of nations and nationalism (including gendered nationalis), political sociology (mnemonic actors, historical capital), trauma studies (denial of the past and constructed traumas), and discourse analysis. A special attention will be paid to neighbourhoods, both geographical and symbolic (Polish-Jewish, Polish-German, Polish-Ukrainian) as well as transational and comparative contexts for discussed phenomena.
To complete the course, students will be expected to present a concise essay dealing with a subject of their choice |
