Property is a basic institution of capitalist societies which has frequently become contested. Arguably, the digital age with its new forms of cognitive co-production, costless reproduction and sharing has brought a new phase of such contestation, and a new awareness of finite resources and the destruction of collective living conditions has reopened the debate over the private or communal, national or universal human ownership of natural resources - if they are to be owned at all. Sociological research has not yet lived up to these challenges; indeed there is little sociological research on property as such. The aim of the seminar is to establish a basic knowledge of classical Western (namely British and US-American) conceptions of property from early modernity to the present. This will involve reading texts from political philosophy, economics, historiography and legal studies - from Locke and Blackstone to Ostrom and Lessig. The aim, however, is to understand sociologically how the institution of (private) property functions and becomes contested in (capitalist) societies.
