Even though the title of this seminar is rather broad and, indeed, many tragedies will probably be addressed in the discussions, the seminar will chiefly be concerned with two plays: Romeo and Juliet and King Lear.
Romeo and Juliet will be the subject of a Shakespeare workshop which will take place on October 14 and 15, i.e. just before the official start of the semester. It will be organized in cooperation with members of the German Shakespeare Society. We will discuss cultural, intermedial, and intercultural aspects of the play as well as new approaches to Shakespeare in the classroom. The participants of this seminar are expected to attend the workshop – in consequence, the seminar will end with the Christmas holidays, and not in February. If it is not be possible for prospective participants to take part, please contact me.
The seminar proper will then focus on King Lear. We will read the text closely (Arden Edition, third series, ed. R.A. Foakes), discuss critical assessments, and, depending on the time still left, watch two or three movies.
Things have changed since the seminar was advertised as "online". It will, actually take place in person, and the German 3G rules (vaccinated, recovered, or tested) will apply. |
