This lecture series is open for all students of English studies (BA, MA, Lehramt). For MA-students it is part of a ten-credit module, and these participants also have to attend the seminar on Modernist Literature.
The rise of Modernism marks one of the most momentous changes in the history of Western culture, second only to the beginning of Modernity. We often consider modernism as a chiefly artistic and literary phenomenon, but it pervaded all culture, and even the sciences experienced fundamental crises that forced them to change the perspectives on their respective subjects and to search for new theoretical paradigms and approaches to pursue.
In the lecture series, we will address Modernism as a comprehensive cultural phenomenon, but the focus will, of course, be on the literary responses to new philosophical, psychological, political, social, and technological developments, and, of course, on innovative aesthetic explorations into literary form. We will also be concerned with the changes this affected on the human mind and life in the modern environment.
The seminar will take place in person, and, according to the latest information we have obtained, the German 3G rules (vaccinated, recovered, or tested) will apply. |
