The Seminar will be held in cooperation with students from the sociology department at Nanjing University, China. Six sessions in November and December 2021 will be held jointly on a digital online platform. Hence, all sessions will be in English.

The course aims at understanding and discussing the role Critical Theories can play with respect to issues of global concern in contemporary sociology such as debates on gender issues, environmental concerns, post-colonialism etc. To this end, we will read some ‘canonical’ texts, but mainly focus on recent developments and debates in Critical Social Theory. Students are required to read the literature marked as ‘required reading’ on the syllabus, to prepare a short presentation in an ‘expert group’ for one of the sessions, and to participate in the class sessions. For full credits, they will write a term paper after the last session. The latter can be done in German.
