The use of corpora (annotated text collections) has become a standard method in contemporary linguistics. Corpora can be used to deal with a variety of linguistic topics, ranging from phonology (e.g. prosody) to syntax (the use of specific structures) and media discourse (e.g. argumentation schemes), and language use more generally speaking. In this course we will cover the theoretical foundations of corpus linguistics, addressing questions like the following: What corpora are there and how can they be accessed? What type of corpus is needed for what type of linguistic question? What types of annotations are there, and what can they be used for? How can we use corpora to address linguistic questions in a theoretically meaningful way? What can corpora tell us about the linguistic behaviour of speakers? What methodological approaches are appropriate? There will also be an applied element to the course, relating to the use of corpora in language learning and teaching. |
