The introductory course is designed to provide an overview of basic theories, models, and key terms in the field of teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). During the course we will not only discuss the theoretical approaches to teaching and learning English, but also look at practical examples and case studies considering how certain theories and methods can be implemented in a classroom. Among the topics presented and discussed in the course are:
- history of teaching English as a foreign language
- neighbouring disciplines and their influence on TEFL
- teaching and learning vocabulary and grammar
- didactic concepts concerning literature, culture and media
- curricula and educational standards
- course books and other teaching/ learning-material
- lesson design
- evaluation
This course supports students in the acquisition of professional knowledge concerning EFL didactics and pedagogical expertise. On the basis of a theoretical foundation participants are encouraged to develop reflective competence concerning these pedagogical options and didactic concepts. Furthermore, students will have the chance to design, present, and analyze exemplary classroom activities.
