Ppolitical parties almost everywhere have similar problems: dealignment, rise of populist right-wing parties, rising volatility of voters, etc. Yet these problems have different consequences in different countries. This seminar will look at recent developments of the British party system which are shaped not only by those problems common to most party systems of the western world but also by specific factors such as a first-past-the-post electoral system, devolution, brexit, and many others. In the course it will be discussed how British parties elect their leaders, how they manage election campaigns, and many other questions. |
