The United Nations face severe problems in adapting to a world in which new powers emerge, new threats arise, new challenges occur. Is the UN prepared to play a role in this era of global governance? Analyzing the status quo of the UN system, especially its institutions, some doubts may raise. The UN’s most powerful arena, the UN Security Council, is out of date. Its composition mirrors the international system of the Cold War era, its legitimacy is called into question, and its power is weakened. Without reforms of the UNSC, which is the heart of the whole system, the world organization fails to be a player in global governance. The UN and its member states tried hard to reform the body but did not succeed – up to now. In this course, we attempt to do the impossible: negotiate successfully and create the UN Security Council of the new era. You learn more about the most powerful institution of the UN system, you get an insight in the mechanisms of global power politics and the UN´s struggle to play a central role in global governance.
