Course Description In spring 2017, the European Union faces severe challenges. The Euro crisis remains unsolved, Europe’s south is still suffering from an economic downturn. The popular vote for ‘Brexit’ has prompted questions about both the institutional future of the Union as well as the legal, economic and political relationship with the United Kingdom, hitherto one of the biggest member states. Moreover, the ‘refugee deal’ with Turkey, the Syrian (civil) war, the
ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and the realignments in world politics demand that the EU member states conclude new strategies for their common foreign and security policies. Against this backdrop, we will investigate the current state of the Union. Our examinations of institutions, processes, and policies will be conducted against the background of normative political theories. We will study the institutional set-up of the EU and will focus specifically on rather non-political institutions like the European Court of Justice and the European Central Bank. We will then consider the aforementioned challenges the EU is currently facing, followed by discussions of potential remedies. Finally, we will ask where the future of the European Union might be going. Depending on students’ previous knowledge and particular interest, sessions can be shortened or extended. This will be discussed during the first meeting.
