Political Economy of the BRICs - Einzelansicht

During the last decade, global political economy has undergone a structural change. For the first time since industrial revolution in the 18th century, new economic powerhouses such as China and India are challenging Western hegemony. This development is rooted in the fast growth of the conomies in the Global South and the creation of new South-South-cooperation agreements. In the debate about this restructuring, the term BRICS (Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa) gained importance, as these states are both important regional (or global) powers and they began to collaborate closer (e.g. in the BRICS forum). The course aims at giving an overview about the rise of Brazil, China, India, and Russia and its implications for global power relations (global trade, multinational companies, etc.) and global economic governance (IMF, World Bank and new Southern institutions). Students will also discuss the ongoing economic crisis in some BRIC states and specific issues such as global environmental problems and the BRICs.
